Dear Faculty and Staff,

Below please find a Scotmail sent to Students regarding Internet
"phishing" attempts. Everyone should be aware that "phishing" can be
associated with
e-mail as well as fraudulent web sites designed to look like
legitimate web pages.

Students may have questions as a result of the Scotmail. Please
direct all student questions to the student helpdesk:
helpdesk at student.ucr.edu .

Dear UCR Students,

In a recent Highlander article, this issue of Internet "phishing" was
discussed. Phishing is any attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive
information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by
masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Normally, Internet phishing is associated with e-mail. However, UCR
recently discovered a fraudulent web site designed to look exactly
like the GROWL login page. The intent of this web page is to deceive
students into believing they are logging into GROWL and as a result
acquire student usernames and passwords.

To avoid being tricked by this type of phishing, please check the web
address of each and every site you visit PRIOR to entering your
username and password. All valid UCR websites will ONLY end in
.UCR.EDU (not .COM , .NET, etc). The fraudulent web site mentioned
in this e-mail ended in .COM.

Valid UCR web site names for GROWL are as
follows: http://growl.ucr.edu and http://ucribm.ucr.edu/Paws/PAWS.html

Please remember that if a web site does not end in .UCR.EDU, it is
not a campus site, no matter how trustworthy it might appear.

If you have questions about this issue please e-mail the student
helpdesk at the following address:
<mailto:helpdesk at student.ucr.edu>helpdesk at student.ucr.edu And
finally, if you believe you have visited a non-UCR site requesting
your log in information, please change your PERM PIN / PASSWORD as
soon as possible.
