[Students] Passing of Dr. Robert Jones

Dear Colleagues,

I am deeply saddened to inform the campus community of the recent death of Robert Jones, a Lecturer in the University Writing Program (UWP).

A graduate of Brigham Young University, Dr. Jones earned his master's and Ph.D. in English at UCR, where he distinguished himself as a versatile, consistent, and highly effective instructor on all five levels of the UWP curriculum, from ESL courses to advanced composition. As a Teaching Assistant and then a Lecturer first appointed in 1995, he led almost 250 of the UWP's small, intensive classes, earning praise from his students and colleagues for his ability to engage undergraduates at often radically different levels of preparation while drawing them toward challenging goals.

In their evaluations through the decades, his students frequently described their progress as writers and their gratitude for their instructor's dedication, insistence upon higher achievement, and care for their progress.

Dr. Jones taught over 4,000 undergraduates during his 35 years in the UWP.

A memorial service will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 30, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Pioneer Chapel, located at 1021 E Pioneer Ave in Redlands. The family will be receiving guests during a viewing one hour before this memorial service beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be held in the Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands.
