<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri Light",sans-serif">For many, remote instruction has caused greater financial hardships. In particular, students living off-campus or not in UCR-managed properties, the pandemic’s fluidity has
led to lingering leases for the fall quarter. <span style="color:#202124;background:white;mso-highlight:white">

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri Light",sans-serif">T<span style="color:black">he university is limited in its ability to intervene with landlords regarding housing issues for properties we do not own and operate. However, we
are working with leaders at the state and local level to explore potential solutions, including our local representatives to the State Legislature, the City of Riverside, and Fair Housing Council of Riverside County. The UCR Offices of Legal Affairs, Government
and Community Relations, and Ombuds are also working to find </span>solutions. In addition, the campus is reconvening
<span style="color:black">its Off-Campus Housing Task Force to address this issue.

<span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri Light",sans-serif;color:black">The City of Riverside passed a resolution that provides protections for tenants who are unable to pay their rent. In addition to placing a hold on evictions, it provides guidelines for
landlords to defer rent (forbearance) due and payment plans to be put in place.</span><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri Light",sans-serif"><o:p></o:p></span></li><li class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin-left:0in;mso-add-space:auto;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">
<a href="https://fairhousing.net/"><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri Light",sans-serif">Fair Housing Council of Riverside County</span></a><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri Light",sans-serif;color:black"> provides free assistance and representation
when it comes to tenant-landlord disputes. They can review leases and make students aware of rights as a tenant. They offer specific guidance on COVID-related issues and can speak to the legality of landlords’ actions as it pertains to the lease and California
law in general.
