Dear Colleagues,
The Office of the President is pleased to announce the 2022-23 Request for Proposals (RFP) for the UC-HBCU Initiative. This systemwide initiative is designed to assist UC faculty interested in developing and encouraging efforts to achieve a more inclusive educational environment of excellence. The goal of the UC-HBCU Initiative is to increase the number of scholars from Historically Black Colleges and Universities completing UC academic doctoral programs. UC faculty grants are available to support HBCU students conducting summer research with UC faculty at a UC campus; and also support departmental efforts to facilitate greater faculty collaboration between UC and HBCU institutions, strengthen UC programs and to increase applications from HBCU scholars to UC PhD programs. Small Research Grants – Grant awards up to $50,000, are also available to be used for research projects designed to improve inclusion and the experience of UC-HBCU students generally, and Black students in particular, enrolled in UC PhD programs. Please see the RFP for more information.
Since 2012, UC has hosted 817 HBCU scholars across all ten UC campuses. There are currently 89 PhD students and two master’s students enrolled across ten UC campuses as a direct result of this Initiative (nineteen PhD and eighteen master’s students have graduated; 37% of the PhD recipients hold tenure track faculty appointments). As you know, building relationships and cultivating greater enrollment of HBCU scholars at UC is a long-term investment.
Please share the information below with faculty on your campus and encourage them to apply.

The Initiative is in direct support of Appointment and Promotion review and appraisal criteria as established in the Academic Personnel Manual: APM 210 - https://ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/apm/apm-210.pdf. This effort also supports the University of California Diversity Statement, adopted as policy in 2007, by the UC Regents. Thus, I want to be sure faculty are made aware of this important opportunity. I appreciate your attention and assistance on behalf of this Initiative.
Sincerely,

Michael T. Brown, Ph.D.
Provost and
Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
