Dear UCR Colleagues,

The 23-24 academic year ended with much excitement as the campus led multiple commencement ceremonies drawing thousands of graduating students, family members, friends, and loved ones. I had the honor of attending the ceremonies and the energy of students and the pride that was exuded by the audience members was evident. To a large extent, these ceremonies reflect what the Division of Undergraduate Education aims to accomplish in its daily work in collaboration with the faculty, staff, leadership, Schools and Colleges, and units across the campus.  We are working vigorously to boost graduation rates and reduce equity gaps while also aiming to boost UCR student involvement in the various high-impact practices that we offer out of the Division of Undergraduate Education.

The stories below illuminate some of the various people and initiatives that are leading the way to meet our unit and campus strategic goals and we look forward to our ongoing work with our campus partners.

Undergraduate Education appoints new associate dean
Dr. Begona Echeverria has been appointed the new Associate Dean/Honors Director for University Honors. Dr. Echeverria is a long time professor in UCR’s School of Education and has served in various leadership roles over the last 20+ years.

As part of her role, Dr. Echeverria will also join the UE Senior Leadership and VPDUE Cabinet and will bring her experience and ideas to elevate UE’s campus wide efforts to meet our strategic goals including boosting graduation rates and reducing equity gaps, among others.

HPAC Director Elected to Board of Directors
Congratulations to Charlie Scruggs, director of Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC), who was elected to the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) national board. Scruggs was previously elected president of the Western Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (WAAHP) in April 2023. He will serve as both president of WAAHP and a member of the Board of Directors for NAAHP until April 2025.

18th Edition of UCR Undergraduate Research Journal
The 18th edition of the UCR Undergraduate Research Journal was published on June 7. It features articles by 11 students from a range of disciplines at UCR. Publishing the Journal is a team effort that involves a Faculty Advisory Board, a Student Editorial Board, and an Editorial Team.

The success of the Journal begins with the Student Editorial Board, which is the machine that drives this effort. The Student Editors were involved in every aspect of the publication of this issue, including marketing the Journal, diligently reviewing the 13 articles that were submitted this year, and coordinating with their teams to select the top 8 articles for publication. The Journal’s publication was celebrated at the Unveiling on June 7. Members of the Student Editorial Board, faculty, and student authors were in attendance and had their contributions recognized.

UE's First Course To Open Spring 2025
The VPDUE’s office continues to collaborate with Academic Senate, the Registrar, other campus partners, and the UE staff to build the infrastructure for UE course offerings now that we secured academic status. UE’s first course will be offered in the Spring 2025.

Reimagining Orientation for 2025 and Beyond
Earlier this summer, VPDUE Rodriguez and VC of Student Affairs Brian Haynes launched the Reimagining Orientation for 2025 and Beyond workgroup. With the support of Provost Watkins and through the guidance of over 45 campus staff, faculty, and leaders who are part of the workgroup, we are reimagining student orientation by looking closely at orientation programming and structure, the role of servingness in orientation, school spirit, family engagement, and using data-informed metrics to guide orientation processes and impact. The workgroup aims to have a solid plan by mid-fall 2024.

UE Student Innovation Fellows
Through the leadership of Israel Fletes and Nelly Cruz, the VPDUE’s office is launching the Student Innovation Fellows. This group of students and UE staff will conceptualize the UE Visioning Space in the Student Services Building, along with innovative student success initiatives for UCR.

First-Year Retention Grant Application
The VPDUE’s office is leading a campus-wide grant application to focus on first-year retention. According to UCR’s Office of Institutional Research, approximately 850 students will not advance to year two without significant academic and non-academic support systems. We are leading an effort that bridges academic, wellness, mental health, and social support efforts to boost first year retention efforts across UCR.

2024 UCR STEM Camp
UCR's College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS)<https://cnas.ucr.edu/> partnered with the Division of Undergraduate Education's XCITE Center for Teaching and Learning<https://teaching.ucr.edu/> for its 2nd Annual STEM Camp. The camp centered on high school students (9th-12th graders) in collaboration with Riverside Unified School District. More than 40 students attended the four sessions covered over two days. Sessions included AR/VR/3D Printing & Drones, while the other two focused on Data Analytics & Python Programming.
