Dear Colleagues,
Time goes by fast when we are having fun…it has been a year since I joined you all at UCR. This has been a challenging but very exciting year. We had to figure out how to implement a new graduate student funding model and think deeply about what constitutes freedom of speech while ensuring our graduate students are being well mentored and achieving their goals. I was thrilled to participate in the commencement ceremony at the beginning of this month and felt the joy and sense of accomplishment of our students (though I will have to rethink the height of my heels for next year after having to stand on that small step helping you hood your student). We graduated 235 PhD students and 936 master’s students in the last three quarters (summer numbers not in yet). These numbers reflect all the work and dedication you have all put into the development of the next generation of scholars, artists and thinkers. The mentoring you provide to the students is one of the key factors in their success. As mentoring effectiveness has become a more prominent metric in the faculty appointment and promotion process, the Graduate Division will focus on projects to support the enhancement of skills and ways to document your efforts this coming year. We will develop and implement a CIMER (Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research) based training program for faculty and a standard evaluation and mentoring plan for graduate students. Mentoring our students and postdoctoral fellows to be ethical researchers is critical and one of our major responsibilities. Starting in the Fall, online Responsible Conduct of Research training offered by CITI will be required for all incoming and current graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty who are members of graduate student committees. This online training will have us all at the same baseline level onto which we will build more programming soon. We will provide you with more detailed information on how to obtain the training later in the Summer. We are excited about the launching of a new online orientation that will be available for our Fall 24 incoming students prior to the start of the academic year. The orientation was designed so students are introduced to our campus, all the resources available to them and what to expect from our great graduate programs.
I wish you all a very restful and productive summer! Lidia

Funding & Employment
Graduate Division Fellowships and Awards 2024-2025
This year we supported 60 students with a new Dissertation Completion Fellowship Award (DCFA) covering over 100 quarters of support in Spring and Summer. We will continue these new awards in 2024/25. To maximize our chance of supporting students ready to write, we will have two calls for the DCFAs one in early Fall and one in Winter to provide up to 2 quarters of support. Please be on the lookout for the call in early August.
In addition, this year we will increase the number of competitive Dissertation Year Fellowships (DYP). Currently, UCOP supports 3 students for 3 quarters. We hope to be able to support additional students that have been reviewed by Grad Council with 1 or 2 quarters in the 2025/26 academic year. DYP and HSI Fellowship call will be in November with a deadline of January 16th.
Graduate External Award Incentive Program
New for this year we will award any graduate student that applies for an external fellowship with $100. If they are successful, they will receive a further $200. If the fellowship stipend is not comparable to the standard TAship salary, the Graduate Division will provide up to $5000 in stipend supplement. Colleges will be responsible for any remaining stipend differentials. We want to encourage the submission of such fellowships as they provide additional support to the student, faculty and programs and are hugely beneficial to the student as a professional development opportunity. Forms will be available to apply for this program on the Graduate Division Fellowship website shortly.
Training Grant Proposal Preparation Fund (TGPPF)
The TGPPF aims to support faculty writing large training grants by providing them with graduate student support following submission and further support if the grant is successful. Please reach out to Dean Kos lidia.kos at ucr.edu<mailto:lidia.kos at ucr.edu> and Associate Dean Wilson emmaw at ucr.edu<mailto:emmaw at ucr.edu> if you are interested in this program.

Commencement
The Graduate Division Hooding Ceremony happened June 1st. We had a record number of 270 doctoral and MFA students hooded by 190 faculty members. Thank you to everyone who attended this uplifting event! You can view a short recap video of the hooding ceremony here – https://youtu.be/6DNDbGcVqw4<https://youtu.be/6DNDbGcVqw4?utm_source=UC+Riverside+Master+List&utm_campaign=fefd125b59-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_02_08_08_57_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-b69786bfc4-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D>
Grades, Exam Results, and Capstone Requirements
Reporting grades and other degree requirements in a timely manner is crucial for students to graduate on time. Late grades or degree requirement reporting will result in the student moving to a future quarter graduation. A chart of upcoming deadlines can be found on our website. https://live-ucr-graduate.pantheonsite.io/graduation-procedures<https://live-ucr-graduate.pantheonsite.io/graduation-procedures?utm_source=UC+Riverside+Master+List&utm_campaign=fefd125b59-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_02_08_08_57_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-b69786bfc4-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D>

QuantCamp
Is taking place in September, and prepares first-year graduate students for the graduate-level quantitative methods they will be using in their research. The program is an introduction for those with no experience in programming and statistics, but can also be taken as a refresher course. Participants will be introduced to foundational concepts routinely used and referenced by most quantitative methods in science, learning basic mathematical and statistical concepts combined with a practical introduction to data analysis using R. While geared toward incoming students, anyone with a need is welcome to register. LEARN MORE AND REGISTER<https://gradquant.ucr.edu/programs/statsbootcamp?utm_source=UC+Riverside+Master+List&utm_campaign=fefd125b59-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_02_08_08_57_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-b69786bfc4-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D>
Dissertation Deep Dive
The Dissertation Deep Dive is aimed at students who have a significant portion of their dissertations completed and expect to file between September 2024 and June 2025. During this 4-day over two weeks on-campus retreat, writers can work on drafting a new chapter or revising what they have already written. Students are placed in small groups with a writing consultant, allowing them to receive feedback and network. Students must have an expected completion date of no later than June 2025, have two chapter drafts already completed, and expect to be enrolled as a full-time graduate student OR be on filing fee in Fall 2024. Seeking Mentors for the 24-25 Academic Year
The Graduate Student Mentorship Program is looking for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students past their first year to mentor our incoming graduate students through the 24-25 academic year. The time commitment is very reasonable and the rewards are great! Graduate students who complete the program are much more likely to stay in their graduate programs and complete their degrees and indicate greater overall satisfaction with their UCR graduate school experience.
