Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the Fall quarter and a new academic year! I hope you’re as excited and energized as I am to welcome our approximately 1,400 incoming graduate students and reconnect with our current students.
All new students have completed an online orientation that provides substantial information about our campus, the Graduate Division, and available resources. Please remind your students that they can continue to access this orientation throughout their studies. One of the slides, titled “Need Help,” outlines who they should contact when they have questions. I encourage you to review this content as well; it will help you guide your students more effectively. You can find the slide on the Graduate Division website here<https://graduate.ucr.edu/need-help?utm_source=UC+Riverside+Master+List&utm_campaign=85ccf95212-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_02_08_08_57_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-b69786bfc4-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D>. As we mentor and advise our students, it’s crucial to differentiate between their academic and employment needs. For instance, students requiring accommodations for their academic pursuits should contact the Student Disability Resource Center, while those needing support for their TA or GSR roles should reach out to the Disability Management Office.
This year, we are placing a strong emphasis on mentorship. I’m excited to share that we’ve begun working with some colleagues to provide mentoring training and CIMER certification (Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research). Our goal is to have all faculty CIMER certified over the next couple of years.
Additionally, we’ve initiated discussions on developing guidelines for the ethical use of AI in research. These guidelines aim to foster conversations about the ethical implications of using various forms of AI in students’ theses and creative work. We expect to share these guidelines with you by mid-Fall. To deepen our understanding of this topic, we’ve invited three scholars from around the world to participate in a seminar series titled “Charting the Landscape of Ethical AI.” I hope you will join us for this exciting opportunity.
I look forward to your continued commitment and collaboration as we work together to advance our graduate programs and support our students’ success. Here’s to a productive and inspiring year ahead!
Warm regards,
Lidia

Funding & Employment
Enrolled Student Fellowship Opportunities
The first call for fellowship applications for students that have advanced to candidacy have been made. These include the Dissertation Year Fellowships (DYFAs) and the Pre-Professoriate HSI awards (PP-HSI) providing a whole year of fellowship support, tuition and fees to outstanding graduate students in their final year of their dissertation. Deadline for nominations from Graduate Programs is January 16th 2025 and awards will be made at the beginning of Spring quarter for use in the 25-26 academic year. In addition, last year we rolled out a new Dissertation Completion Fellowship Award (DCFAs) for use in the current academic year to relieve students of teaching obligations whilst writing up their dissertation. We have a Fall call (deadline October 16th) and a Winter call January 16th to provide support for up to 2 quarters. Timeline is especially important for these awards and students are expected to graduate by the end of the award. Please see the appropriate graduate program for internal deadlines and further information can be found here.
