[Faculty] Important: PI Proposal Planning Guidance for Potential UAW Strike

Dear Principal Investigators,

Last week you should have received a communication from UC System Provost
and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Katherine S. Newman with
an update on the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike vote.  As mentioned, the
UAW also represents the new Research and Public Service Professionals
(RPSP).   Those in the Research Administration title code in the central
office and orgs/div/departments are covered by the RPSP bargaining unit.

This correspondence is to provide initial guidance to PIs for planning
purposes in the event of a strike.  We do not know at this time if there
will be a strike nor the exact dates; however, for planning purposes we
should assume that any strike may take place during the week of March 16th or
23rd.

If you plan to submit a proposal, which has a sponsor submission deadline
occurring during the week of March 16th, the proposal must be submitted to
Research and Economic Development (RED) no later than five (5) business
days prior to the sponsor’s deadline.  For example, a proposal with a
sponsor deadline of 16th must be provided to RED, in its final form for
review and submission, no later than March 9th.

If you have a proposal with a sponsor submission deadline occurring during
the week of March 23rd, the proposal must be submitted to RED no later than
five (5) business days before the sponsor’s deadline.  For example, a
proposal with a sponsor deadline of March 23rd will be required to be
submitted to RED, in its final form for review and submission, no later
than March16th.

This timeline does not take into consideration internal departmental
deadlines. Please consult your departmental Financial and Administrative
Officer regarding any such internal deadlines.

Please note that this situation is fluid and as we get additional
information (e.g., confirmation of a strike) we will provide additional
updates.
