Dear colleagues,
On June 30, 2023, George E. Haggerty, Distinguished Professor Emeritus in English and Distinguished Professor of the Graduate Division, passed away.
During his 42 years at UCR, George kept the highest profile with extraordinary accomplishments as a scholar of 18th-century English literature, Gothic and LGBTQ literary studies, as a teacher and mentor for countless students and colleagues, with an impressive list of senate committee service in Courses, Education Policy, General Education, and Academic Personnel. After retirement, George served as the Vice-President of the UCR Emeriti Association, and continued to make a difference in the field and in our community.
Here is a beautiful tribute from the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences: https://chass.ucr.edu/blog/2023/07/18/george-e-haggerty-distinguished-professor-emeriti-english
The English Department plans to host a memorial service in the fall.
Please join me in our remembrance and celebration of George's legacy. We are honored to count him among the most renowned of our community.
In your service,
Sang-Hee
Chair of the Academic Senate
