Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to a new academic year.
The Academic Senate of the University of California is one of the most influential faculty governments in the world. Our Senate is empowered to exercise direct control of the University's academic mission. We advise on all other matters crucial to the operation of the University such as academic personnel evaluation and promotion, budget, hiring, admissions, and long-range planning. Our system is unique in that the Senate is indeed (or at least is committed to) an equal partner in shared governance<https://regents.universityofcalifornia.edu/governance/bylaws/bl40.html>, both on our campus (Riverside Division) and the systemwide UC (Academic Council).
Our Senate<https://senate.ucr.edu/committees>, with 26 standing committees and Faculty Executive Committees for the seven Schools and Colleges, are ready to start a new year, which promises to present several critical issues to our campus as we continue to both build and explore the new landscape of instruction and research brought on by on-line instruction, generative AI, graduate education, IT restructuring, and their impact on the faculty upholding the core instruction and research mission of the university. We look forward to working together to chart our way forward. Our Senate will be as robust as we hear and speak the voice of our membership of more than 1,200 senate faculty. I look forward to hearing from you.
Finally, I hope all of you will plan to attend the in person Fall Divisional Meeting of the Academic Senate on December 5, 2023, starting at 1:00 pm, in Room 110A of the Genomics Auditorium.
Sincerely,
Sang-Hee Lee
Chair of the Riverside Division of the Academic Senate
Professor, Department of Anthropology
