Sent on behalf of Academic Senate Chair Sang-Hee Lee

Dear Colleagues,

I write to share information from Systemwide Academic Senate Chair Jim Steintrager regarding the upcoming Regents meeting on January 23 - 25th during which one of the topics will be the proposed adoption of Regents Policy on Use of University Administrative Websites as well as Senate Regulation 630.E.

This is an alarming situation, about which I and the other division chairs are expressing serious concerns as documented in Jim Steintrager's attached letter to President Drake.

Yours,

Sang-Hee Lee, Chair

Academic Senate

Dear Colleagues,

There is a meeting of the full Board of Regents next week (January 24-25), and there are two items of particular interest and importance to the Academic Senate.

On Wednesday, the Board will consider a recommendation to adopt a new policy that would effectively bar departmental political statements (described in the proposed policy as "opinions") from department websites and other official University channels of communication.

On Thursday, Senate Regulation 630.E, which is the campus experience requirement that was approved by Academic Council and Academic Assembly last year, will be presented to the Board as a recommendation for their consideration and approval (or not). Bringing the regulation modification to the Board for their approval is in keeping with Regents Bylaw 22.2, which spells out the reserved authorities of the Regents. I'll present how we got to this spot in greater detail when Council meets at the end of January but wanted to alert you to the item.

Below I provide links to the items along with planned times for presentation. I encourage to read both items. You may want to consider offering your perspective during a public comment session. You'll also find information on how to join the livestream of the meeting. Feel free to circulate this information as you deem helpful.

Best,

Jim
