To our campus community:
UC Riverside, along with its sister UC campuses, recently learned that
personal data for some UC community members was obtained through a
cyberattack on a University of California Office of the President (UCOP)
system. The security team at UCOP, working with law enforcement, is
investigating the matter and has released an official statement
<https://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/2021/03/uc-part-of-nationwide
-cyber-attack.html> .
Beginning Monday, March 29, members of the UC Riverside community began
receiving messages from malicious actors attempting to extort money and
cause harm. These messages stated that the individual's personal data had
been stolen and would be made public. UCR learned that similar messages were
being received in email accounts for multiple campuses throughout the UC
system, and that these emails contained a link to a public website where a
sample of personal data from UC community members was posted. We took
appropriate steps to block these messages from UC Riverside email accounts.
UC Riverside takes the privacy and security of your data very seriously and
is working diligently with UCOP to understand the full scope of the
cyberattack and who was affected. If you receive any suspicious email,
please report it to us at abuse at ucr.edu <mailto:abuse at ucr.edu> without
clicking on any links within the suspected email or replying to the sender.
Guidance on how to report suspicious email can be found here

We encourage you to review our article
<https://its.ucr.edu/what-to-do-if-you-suspect-email-phishing-at-ucr> on
what to do if you suspect email phishing at UCR. Phishing is a constant
threat, and attackers frequently target university students and staff

Always be suspicious of any email asking for personal or user account
information. UC Riverside will never request such information via email.
Thank you for your attention and diligence. More information will be
provided as it becomes available.
