Dear UCR Student,

As you begin this academic year, you will encounter many opportunities to get involved. There are many different student organizations at UCR, including fraternities and sororities. In order for you to make informed choices about your involvement, UCR would like to provide all students with the following information regarding risk management and student organizations. The list of dismissed and/or unrecognized student organizations will change on a regular basis and we advise you to refer to this website<https://studentlife.ucr.edu/non-recognized-organizations> for the current list of unrecognized student organizations or contact the Student Life Office with any questions. We encourage you to explore involvement opportunities with recognized student organizations by visiting HighlanderLink<https://highlanderlink.ucr.edu/>.

There are some students who act on behalf of student organizations that are not recognized by UCR. Student members of these groups may contact you to join their organization or simply invite you to attend their events. These organizations are not affiliated with the campus or governing councils in any way. Campus personnel do not advise these groups, do not provide training and resources, and their events are solely independent of UCR.

The groups include but are not limited to:

Dismissed Organizations
alpha Kappa Delta Phi (aKΔΦ) Sorority was dismissed by UCR in 2013 as a result of hazing.
Alpha Phi Alpha (AΦA) Fraternity was dismissed in 2019 as a result of hazing allegations.
Alpha Sigma Omicron (AΣO) Co-ed pre-health fraternity was dismissed from UCR in 2017 as a result of hazing.
Beta Chi Theta (BX*) Fraternity was dismissed by UCR in 2017 as a result of risk management violations and failure to comply with University sanctions.
Beta Upsilon Delta (BUD) Fraternity was dismissed by UCR in 2018 as a result of risk management violations and failure to comply with University sanctions.
Korean American Student Association (KASA) Student organization was dismissed by UCR in 2015 for violations of campus policies and expectations.
Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) Fraternity was suspended by its national headquarters and dismissed by UCR in 2019 as a result of hazing.
Phi Kappa Psi (ΦK*) Fraternity was dismissed by UCR in 2020 as a result of hazing and failure to comply with University sanctions.
Pi Alpha Phi (ΠΑΦ) Fraternity also known as "Pineapples" was dismissed by UCR in 2012 as a result of hazing and failure to comply with University sanctions.
Pi Delta Psi (ΠΔ*) Fraternity was dismissed by UCR in 2019 as a result of failure to comply with University sanctions.
Pi Kappa Alpha (ΠΚΑ) Fraternity also known as "PIKE" was suspended by its national headquarters and dismissed by UCR in 2016 as a result of risk management violations and failure to comply with University sanctions.
Rho Delta Chi (*Δ*) Sorority was dismissed in 2019 as a result of hazing violations.
Surf Club Student organization was dismissed by UCR in 2013 for violations of campus policies and expectations.

Unrecognized Organizations: Not dismissed for behavioral concerns, just never formally recognized by the campus.
Kappa Sigma (ΚΣ) Fraternity began activity in Riverside in 2011 but is not recognized by the University.

Suspended Organizations:
Sigma Alpha Epsilon (ΣAE) was placed on interim suspension by UCR in Spring 2022 due to hazing allegations.

These organizations have had their recognition revoked by the institution or have never received recognition by UCR, for various reasons. Joining dismissed organizations and/or participating in activities perceived to be official activities of dismissed organizations is considered a policy violation and could result in suspension or dismissal from the University. We advise you to refer to this website<https://studentlife.ucr.edu/non-recognized-organizations> for the current list of unrecognized student organizations or contact the Student Life Office with any questions.

Hazing Prevention

Another concern on college campuses is hazing. The University of California, Riverside is charged with the responsibility of providing an intellectually engaging environment in which standards for behavior are clearly communicated to members of the community. We encourage all students to take action in any situations where they feel individuals may be at risk. If you have heard of or seen any activity that may put students at risk, you can report it to UCPD, Student Conduct, the Fraternity and Sorority Involvement Center, Student Life, Athletics, Residential Life, or the Dean of Students.

For additional information regarding hazing, please visit our Dean of Students website here<https://deanofstudents.ucr.edu/policies-and-procedures/hazing>.

High Pressure Groups
Some UCR student organizations are affiliated with outside groups. While the vast majority of groups may be helpful to members, some may use high pressure tactics to recruit students.

Why are high-pressure groups so harmful?

  * They tend to isolate you from family, friends, and other groups.
  * They may ask you to give up control of your thoughts or decisions.
  * They may focus on guilt and shame.
  * They may promote crises with school, your career, or your social life.

What are warning signs of a high-pressure group?

Ask yourself these questions: Does the group or its representatives:

  * Speak in a derogatory way about your past religious affiliation?
  * Describe your parents as unable to understand or help you with religious matters?
  * Label your doubts and questions as signs of a weak faith?
  * Invite you on a retreat but can't (or won't) give you an overview of the purpose or activities before you go?
  * Insist that you spend so much time with them that you can't get your studying done or you don't have time for your other friends and activities?
  * Pressure you to get others involved in the group?
  * Discourage you from keeping in touch with your family and friends or not allow you to talk to your friends or your family alone?
  * Deflect questions you ask about their group and tell you they'll answer your questions later?
  * Claim to have the answers to your problems and that you can't find answers anywhere else?
  * Pressure you to give them money?
  * Answering "yes" to one or two questions doesn't mean that a group is destructive or harmful, but it does mean you should proceed slowly and investigate the group more carefully.

You can find out more information about our recognized student organizations, hazing prevention, and many other ways to get involved on campus by contacting the Student Life Office at studentlife.ucr.edu<https://studentlife.ucr.edu/> or ucrlife at ucr.edu<mailto:ucrlife at ucr.edu>.

We wish you all the best!
