Fellow Highlanders,

My office has received multiple inquiries about the recent arrest of a UCR student<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/announcements/2024/05/07/student-weapon-campus-police-custody> in connection with the discovery of a weapon in a campus residential building. We find ourselves balancing our desire to be transparent with our legal obligation to comply with privacy laws, including those specific to students.
What I can tell you is that in this situation, consistent with our policies, there was a full assessment of the student and the situation. The student was placed on interim suspension and ordered to leave campus and not return pending the outcome of the conduct process. The student complied and continues to comply. All available information was considered, including information guarded by privacy statutes. After reviewing all the information at the time, we concluded the student was not a threat to the campus and it was safe to carry on normal campus operations.

I understand that it is frustrating that there are many other questions we cannot answer to your satisfaction. We also can't say some things because it might interfere with the district attorney's prosecution or the student conduct process. The information we cannot share includes information that may help alleviate concerns.

Rest assured that the police continue to closely monitor the situation using all available tools and resources. Any change in that assessment will result in the university taking appropriate steps, including closing the campus, if necessary.
It is of utmost importance to ensure your safety and well-being. Mental health therapists are available 24 hours a day for crisis counseling and support at Counseling and Psychological Services<https://counseling.ucr.edu/> (951-827-5531). Additionally, Case Management<https://casemanagement.ucr.edu/> (951-827-5000) is ready to assist students in making connections to university resources during difficult times, reaffirming our commitment to your support and care.

For additional information about this incident and other important campus operations, please visit the Announcements section<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/announcements> of insideucr.ucr.edu<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/>, which is updated regularly.

Best Regards,

Brian Haynes
