Dear Colleagues,

On October 18th, our friend and colleague Dr. William (Bill) Walton, UCR Professor of Entomology, passed away.

Bill joined the UCR faculty in 1995 and his momentum of achievement and service never slowed during 25 exceptional years. He exemplified the ideal ecologist, steadfastly encouraging interesting ideas and using techniques from wide-ranging fields such as water chemistry, microbiology, botany, and molecular biology. His various activities in aquatic ecology and mosquito control at UCR resulted in over 130 refereed scientific publications, conference symposia, and review articles.

Bill made critical contributions to the teaching and research missions of the UCR Entomology Department that helped propel it to its top global ranking. A remarkably effective and dedicated teacher and a collaborative and influential researcher, Bill remains held in high esteem by both his colleagues and his students.

His service record is too voluminous to list in its entirety here, but includes serving on an immense variety of university and professional committees with a generous demeanor and spirit. A more detailed account of his service record and academic and personal achievements is in the attached Memoriam.

Please keep Bill’s family and friends in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Tom
