Dear Colleagues,

I join the higher education community in expressing my shock and sorrow at the campus shooting that took the life of Dr. Thomas Meixner, professor and department head of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona.

Professor Meixner had deep ties to UC Riverside, as he began his academic career here as an assistant professor in the department of Environmental Sciences from 1999 to 2004. After leaving UCR, he continued an affiliation with UCR’s Center for Conservation Biology.

His UCR colleagues remember him not only as an excellent scholar, but as a kind, funny, and generous human being.

Our academic community is a tight-knit one, and a former colleague’s death under such tragic circumstances is particularly unsettling.

If you need support, please contact the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program<https://hr.ucr.edu/human-resources-benefits/faculty-and-staff-assistance-program> for confidential counseling, referral, or other resources.

Let us come together as a community against violence.

Sincerely,

Liz
