Dear Colleagues,

“Groundbreaking” is a word that often appears in UC Riverside communications. The term has its roots in planting crops or construction but is most often used as an adjective to describe innovation. The relationship between these things—opening the earth to plant seeds or lay foundation and the production of pioneering research—allows us to keep taking strides forward as a research university.

As autumn nears, I’m thinking of the many ways groundbreaking defines the upcoming year and prepares the next generation of leaders and scientists for future discovery.

University Teaching and Learning Facility (UTLF)
A well-known challenge for many years was our need for instructional space to support our current faculty and students. The Student Success Center helped alleviate some of the shortages. Then, last year, we began work on a new School of Business building, which will soon open its doors.

Last spring, we announced Regental approval for the University Teaching and Learning Facility (UTLF) to add more classrooms as well as areas for teaching labs, studios, and support space.

In the fall, we will celebrate with an official groundbreaking ceremony but the work of clearing the area of Parking Lot 19 has already begun, as reported<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/stories/2024/07/29/prep-work-begins-new-classroom-and-instructional-lab-building> in late July. 2024 Chancellor's Faculty & Staff Picnic
We don’t just break ground. We also break bread.

The annual picnic marks one of the first signs that fall quarter is about to start. Please join me for a complimentary lunch and social on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on the HUB Dining Patio.

Seating will be available outdoors in the HUB Dining patio or indoors in the HUB Dining Room. Additionally, feel free to bring picnic blankets if you prefer to enjoy your lunch on the lawn.

KUCR Radio will again provide music and UCR Staff Assembly will treat all to dessert. Be sure to visit the UCR Program Info Booths while enjoying time to socialize with colleagues.

In August, each passing day is a reminder that new and returning students, faculty, and staff will descend upon campus next month. For some, summer means vacation time. But for many of you, this is the busiest time of year. However you prepare for fall, thank you for your efforts to welcome all Highlanders to the start of the academic year.
