The federal administration recently announced it plans to close the Department of Education, though the administration lacks authority to eliminate a cabinet-level agency. The Department of Education has announced layoffs and buyouts that will cut the department’s staff nearly in half.

UC updates

  *   In the April 3 weekly federal update<https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/federal-updates/weekly-federal-update-brief>, the UC system shares about several new federal investigations of UC campuses, including allegations of discriminatory admissions practices. The UC maintains its longstanding adherence to Proposition 209.

  *   UC President Michael Drake identified<https://ucop.edu/communications/_files/pmvd-march-regents-opening-remarks-03-19-25-as-delivered.pdf> to the Board of Regents three primary threats to research universities including in research dollars, Medicare and Medicaid cuts, and to the university’s values. He then discussed contingency planning that “has become our daily work.”
