[Ucrfacultyandstaff] Campus Update – August 2025

UCR Chancellor chancellor at ucr.edu
Fri Aug 15 11:04:30 PDT 2025

Dear Colleagues,

It has been one month since I began my service as chancellor of UC
Riverside. During my first several weeks, I had opportunities to engage
broadly, including attending my first UC Board of Regents meeting,
traveling to Washington, D.C. for introductory meetings with members of the
California delegation, and meeting with community organizations in Inland
Southern California.

I also had the opportunity to learn more about UCR’s rich history and meet
many of you, the staff and faculty who bring the university’s mission to
life every day.

One aspect of our founding that has stayed with me is the university’s
beginning as a citrus experiment station. While designed to support
California’s agricultural industry, the resulting research has benefited
growers across Florida, Texas, and Arizona. The citrus experiment station
morphed into the university that stands here today, but the spirit of
regional commitment with far-reaching impact remains.

Such accomplishments are only possible with exceptional people. At every
turn, I’ve encountered students, faculty, and staff who are deeply
committed to access, excellence, and collaboration.

*Chancellor’s Faculty and Staff Picnic*
One of my favorite events this past month was gathering with colleagues for
coffee and conversation in front of Hinderaker Hall during my first week.
Now, I’m looking forward to the Faculty and Staff Picnic on Tuesday,
September 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All faculty and staff are invited
to this annual event to kick off the academic year. Please be sure to
register

to
attend.

*Welcoming Students to Campus*
This fall, UCR will break records when we welcome the largest incoming
class in the university’s history. Move-in for North District, campus
apartments, and residence halls will take place from September 18 to 21,
with instruction beginning on September 25.

A special highlight this year is the opening of the North District 2
residence facility, created in partnership with Riverside Community College
District. This innovative collaboration will house 200 community college
students at UCR, giving them an early opportunity to experience campus life
alongside our students to ease their path to transfer.

You are UCR’s most important ambassadors. As you encounter students, thank
you for extending warmth, guidance, and Highlander spirit to help all feel
welcomed and supported.

*Looking ahead*
Just as UCR has grown from its citrus station roots into a world-class
university, this fall reminds us that growth is both a point of pride and a
call to action. With such a strong foundation and a community committed to
progress and transformative impact, I look forward to all we will
accomplish in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu, Ph.D.
Chancellor
