Security Alert: NSF Grant Award Scam
Dear Highlander Community,
We're writing to make you aware of a concerning trend: scammers are
impersonating the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) to defraud
individuals. These scams typically involve notifications of supposed grant
awards, contingent upon a fee. Please be informed that the NSF has a
rigorous merit-based review process that governs the issuance of research
and research-related awards. NSF does not award funds for personal use.
The NSF will never:
-
Contact you initially by phone to announce a grant award.
-
Request any form of individual payment to claim a grant.
-
Solicit personal information like bank account details, Social Security
numbers, or other sensitive data upfront via phone or email.
If you have been contacted in this manner, please do not engage with the
sender or caller. Instead, report the incident to the Federal Trade
Commission (FTC) <https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/>. Protecting yourself and
our community from these scams is paramount.
Sincerely,
Matthew Gunkel
