Dear Campus Community:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jeff Girod as UC Riverside’s
next associate vice chancellor and chief communications and marketing officer,
beginning July 13. In this role, he will report directly to me.

Over the last 18 years, Jeff has held a variety of marketing and
communications roles at UCR. Currently, he serves as the assistant dean for
marketing and communications in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social
Sciences, or CHASS, where he leads marketing and communications strategy
for UCR’s largest college. He pioneered a Spanish-language recruitment
campaign to leverage UCR’s status as an R1 Hispanic-Serving Institution.
>From 2024 to 2025, he served concurrently as interim director of Student
Affairs Marketing and Communications.

Jeff previously held roles as director of marketing and communications for
CHASS and as senior visual content manager for Student Affairs Marketing
and Communications. Prior to UCR, Jeff held several media positions. He
worked at the Press-Enterprise as a reporter, graphic designer, and
columnist. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from UC Riverside and a Bachelor
of Arts from UC Santa Barbara, having transferred to UCSB from Pasadena
City College.

Jeff assumes the leadership role last held by Johnny Cruz, who left UCR in
August 2025. I want to express my gratitude to John Warren, senior news and
content director, who has served in an interim capacity.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to the members of the search
advisory committee: Michael Richards, associate chancellor (chair); Kendall
Burks, communications director, Research, Innovation, and Economic
Development; Pamela Coe, communications director, Health, Well-being &
Safety; Kate Dorff, manager, external relations & protocol for the School
of Medicine; David Edgerton, director of national reputation & marketing for
central Communications and Marketing; Emily Engelschall, associate
vice chancellor,
Enrollment Services; Mark Long, dean of the School of Public Policy; Sarah
Nightingale, assistant director, content and publications for central
Communications
and Marketing, and Mia Rose Tuifua, ASUCR executive vice president.

Sincerely,

S. Jack Hu, Ph.D.

Chancellor
