Dear Colleagues,

I am deeply saddened to inform the campus community of the May 10 death of
Dr. Carl Feinstein, a founding faculty member in the Department of
Psychiatry and Neuroscience in the School of Medicine.

A nationally recognized leader in child and adolescent psychiatry, Dr.
Feinstein devoted his career to advancing the understanding and care of
young people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental conditions, and
complex psychiatric needs. As a clinician, he believed deeply in the
therapeutic relationship, in listening carefully, and in meeting each child
and family with dignity and compassion.

Many knew Dr. Feinstein not only for his extraordinary accomplishments —
including his leadership at Stanford University and the Stanford Autism
Center — but for the generosity of spirit he brought to every interaction.
A faculty member since December 2015, Dr. Feinstein helped shape the
foundation of the Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience and its
mission. His presence helped define a culture of academic excellence,
humanity, and service that continues today.

He is remembered by residents and fellows for the calm wisdom he offered in
supervision, the curiosity he inspired in teaching, and the kindness he
extended to learners and colleagues alike. Faculty who benefited from his
mentoring describe his support as transformative, both professionally and
personally.

Dr. Feinstein’s legacy lives on through the countless individuals he taught
and mentored, the families whose lives he touched, and the enduring values
he helped instill within his field. His contributions to psychiatry,
education, and advocacy will continue to resonate for years to come.

Please keep Dr. Feinstein’s family, loved ones, and colleagues in your
thoughts during this time of sorrow.

Sincerely,

Liz
