Resource Highlight : Tutor Assistance Program Hello, first-year students! My name is Andrew Boyd, and I'm a first-year Sociology major at UCR. I wanted to share an academic resource that has been especially helpful to me: the Tutor Assistance Program (TAP) at the Academic Resource Center. If you're looking for support in subjects like math, science, or English, TAP is a great place to start. The program offers tutoring across a wide range of courses, including many related to your major. TAP tutors-who are experienced upperclassmen-also teach valuable study skills and strategies that promote critical thinking and help you build the habits needed for long-term academic success. Personal Story: On November 11th, 2025, I scheduled a tutoring session with TAP because I needed help writing my essay for WRIT 0105. In the past, l've struggled with creating strong thesis statements and organizing my ideas effectively, so l asked the tutor from the program to help me in developing a solid thesis and to provide feedback on my draft. My tutor was extremely helpful since she offered great insight on how I could strengthen my paper and asked thoughtful questions about how my ideas connected to the prompt. Through brainstorming different topics together, she encouraged me to think more critically about my evidence and reasoning and ensure I was addressing the prompt directly. After that, we worked on structuring those ideas into clear, well-organized paragraphs. Overall, the experience was very positive, and I would highly recommend the Tutor Assistance Program to all 1st year students. More Info: Students are able to schedule appointments online or at the Academic Resource Center at 957-827-3721. Tutoring sessions are offered either in-person or via zoom. Also, sessions can be in-group or single person. Student session are 50 minutes per appointment.
