Subject: Recent Senate Reports on Budgets and General Education

Dear Colleagues,

I write to pass on some recent reports to campus as we complete the Senate's business for the 2021/22 academic year and prepare for the start of the next.

I share the Committee on Planning and Budget's Final Report, which is the product of the 2021/22 meetings with Deans and Vice Provosts. This report is an excellent summary of how the campus receives revenue and areas for faculty participation in the shared governance on budget matters.

The report is available at the UCR Planning and Budget committee website <https://senate.ucr.edu/committees/17> under the Resources tab and directly at this link<https://ucr-senate-public.s3.amazonaws.com/committees/17/committee_resource/planning-and-budget-committee-report-to-senate-2022-62f525f31e3c3-.pdf>. I would like to thank Professor Dana Simmons in particular for leading the committee as Chair this year and all the members for their insight and efforts to understand and communicate the complex nature of a university budget.

A recent item the Senate has completed reviewing is the Ad hoc General Education Review Committee report. This report received comments and consultative feedback during Fall and Winter 2021/22. We have delivered these responses back to our colleagues who served on the ad hoc committee and to the Provost's office. You can find it on the issues page or directly at this link<https://ucr-senate-public.s3.amazonaws.com/issues/21-22-jstoew-kb-kw-genedadhocrhorizons-8-9-22-62f2df8130fc7-.pdf>. The responses from Senate committees begin at page 110 after the report. Future steps on General Education will require additional deliberation with the Senate, Provost, and College and School leaderships based on this feedback.

As a reminder, all Senate issues under consultation are listed under the Senate "Review Items" https://senate.ucr.edu/issues where committee reports and proposals are archived.

In closing, this is my last communication as Division Chair. I want to say thank you to the chairs of Senate committees this year - it was a delight to be around a (virtual) table with faculty leaders who brought compassion and energy to the work at hand. I would also like to thank Jonathan Eacott for his terrific service as vice-chair that spanned all the extra meetings and document crafting.

Finally I want to welcome Sang-Hee Lee in her assuming the Division Chair of the UCR Senate as of September 1. Thank you for your willingness to help lead the campus and faculty.

It has been a pretty busy but meaningful time to participate in shared governance on our campus and at the UC system. I wish we were able to spend less energy on Covid and more on other academic challenges and campus vision during my term, but together with the other leaders in the Senate we did our best to represent the faculty voice and helped set the priorities and weigh in on decisions impacting the institution. I encourage all faculty to consider participation in the Senate through your vote, advocacy and in committee service to shape and prioritize the values and principles that define our campus community goals for research and education. I hope to see you again on campus as we start a new academic year.
