Opportunities to Advance Sustainability Innovation and Social Inclusion (OASIS) is leading the way
OASIS<https://oasis.ucr.edu?utm_source=Test&utm_campaign=e9274fb21d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_04_04_06_29_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e922d65c84-e9274fb21d-> is driving regional economic development through research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and workforce development around sustainability, clean technology, and social inclusion. The initiative has already garnered the support of many local and regional partners and received $60M+ in funding from the State of California and federal Community Project Funding.
Earlier this year, UCR's Office of Research and Economic Development (RED)<https://research.ucr.edu?utm_source=Test&utm_campaign=e9274fb21d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_04_04_06_29_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e922d65c84-e9274fb21d-> announced the first call for the OASIS Internal Funding Awards. Final selections have been made, totaling over $1.7M in internal seed funding (one of UCR's largest competitive internal seed funding efforts ever). Addressing Health Disparities in COVID-19 Outcomes in Riverside County
Principal Investigator: Meera Nair, Associate Professor, Biomedical Sciences

Area of Focus: Community Health and Health Disparities
COVID-19 remains a significant public health problem in Riverside County, especially for Hispanic/Latinx populations. Additionally, the increased risks for long-term impacts of COVID in these historically marginalized populations, are unknown. This project brings together a multidisciplinary team of biomedical, social science, and science policy experts to investigate acute COVID-19 infections and long COVID in the Hispanic/Latinx community of Riverside County-a population that constitutes nearly half of all residents in the county and has been substantially affected by COVID-19, compared to other local racial-ethnic populations.
CREATE-IE: Collaborative Research to Expand and Accelerate Transportation Electrification in the Inland Empire
Principal Investigator: Matthew Barth, Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering & Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education
Co-Principal Investigators: Kanok Boriboonsomsin (CE-CERT), Marissa Brookes (political science), Juliann Emmons Allison (gender & sexuality studies), Catherine Gudis (history)
Area of Focus: Clean Transportation and Infrastructure
The Inland Empire has quickly become one of the nation's largest logistics hubs, with over a billion square feet of warehouse space. The rapid growth of industrial production in the region has raised concerns about social and public health risks. A proposed solution is the electrification of the current truck fleet; however, that would require developing a new charging infrastructure network. The results and findings from this seed project will inform the development
of a research program aimed at expanding and accelerating transportation electrification in the region.
Development of a Novel Photochemical Water Reuse Technology for Urban Agriculture Irrigation and Food Production
Principal Investigators: Haizhou Liu, Associate Professor, Chemical and Environmental Sciences
Co-Principal Investigator: Amir Haghverdi (agricultural and urban water management)
Area of Focus: Natural Resource Management
Water reuse in agriculture is estimated to increase substantially over the next decade. Photochemical treatment harnessing deep ultraviolet (UV) light is an emerging technology for beneficial water reuse in irrigated agriculture, which is the primary consumer of freshwater resources in the United States. This project aims to improve agriculture sustainability and agro-urban ecosystem health by developing an innovative photochemical treatment for recycled wastewater irrigation and evaluating downstream risk using a field irrigation research trial. New technologies integrating these novel concepts will establish feasibility and inform future irrigation water treatment.
Developing an Eco-Manufacturing Hub around Lithium Resources in the Salton Sea Geothermal Field
Principal Investigator: Arun Raju, Associate Research Engineer
Co-Principal Investigators: Juchen Guo (chemical & environmental engineering), Alfredo Martinez-Morales (CE-CERT), Wilfred Elders (earth and planetary sciences), Vincent Lavallo (chemistry), Timothy Lyons (earth and planetary sciences), Michael McKibben (earth and planetary sciences), and Kurt Schwabe (public policy)
Area of Focus: Clean Energy and Fuels
Lithium-based battery technologies are the preferred short-term energy storage medium in batteries and electric vehicles. The World Bank estimates that global lithium production will need to increase by 500% by 2050 to meet the total demand for clean energy technologies. The Salton Sea Geothermal Field (SSGF) is a source of renewable electricity and contains the world's largest known undeveloped brine reserve of lithium. This project will create a roadmap to develop a local eco-manufacturing hub built around the resources in the SSGF and provide a framework for UCR's role in research development and demonstration, community engagement, workforce development, and policy support in the Salton Sea area.
Sensing and Decision Support in Precision Agronomy: Five Convergent Thrusts to Support Sustainable Agriculture in Southern California
Principal Investigators: Elia Scudiero, Associate Professional Researcher, Environmental Sciences
Co-Principal Investigator: Konstantinos Karydis (electrical and computer engineering)
Area of Focus: Agriculture Technology and Food Security
This project will investigate Southern California-based convergent research and workforce development as potential areas of growth in precision agronomy. Agriculture is a driving force of economic impact on Southern California and the nation. However, water and other natural resources are scarce, potentially jeopardizing the future of agriculture in the region. It is anticipated that technology and knowledge developed from precision agriculture will contribute to increased long-term sustainability and resilience of agronomic systems.
UCR faculty and Southern California agtech entrepreneurs will partner to build creative and competitive teams to engage in future research and business opportunities.
Technology, Innovation, and a University-Led Entrepreneurship Ecosystem in the Inland Empire
Principal Investigator: Qingfang Wang, Professor, Public Policy
Co-Principal Investigator: Elaine Wong (management)
Area of Focus: Innovation, Social Inclusion, Education, and Workforce Development
Despite the rapid growth of research and practice in university entrepreneurship programs, few studies have performed examinations from an entrepreneurial ecosystem perspective. Existing disparities across ethnic and gender groups are impeding the social, economic, and political advancement of these minorities through innovation and entrepreneurship. This project will address the gap in research and practice. Partnerships with public and private stakeholders will provide a natural experiment to examine the role of higher education institutions in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in the Inland Empire.
