Summer 2025
Faculty Quarterly
Dear Colleagues,
As we conclude the academic year, I wish to take this opportunity to
acknowledge and celebrate the remarkable achievements of our graduate
community. We proudly celebrated the graduation of 339 doctoral students,
955 Masters’ students—a reflection of the strength and dedication of our
programs, faculty, and students.
More than 4,000 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers engaged in
activities offered by Grad Success this year through workshops, trainings,
and social events, including those focused on teaching assistant
preparation, academic writing, statistical and other quantitative methods,
mentoring, community building and career preparedness. These programs play
a vital role in equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed
both within and beyond the university.
A key focus this year has been on mentorship, which we recognize as
essential to the graduate student experience. Twenty faculty members
participated in our mentorship training and earned their CIMER (Center for
the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research) certification. I’m
especially pleased that some of these faculty will be co-leading mentorship
training for our colleagues in the upcoming year. I encourage all faculty
to consider participating in this important initiative. This year also
marked the launch of the Annual Mentoring and Evaluation form, designed to
support intentional and constructive dialogue between faculty and students.
It is my hope that this tool has served to strengthen alignment between
student goals and faculty expectations, thereby enhancing each student’s
progress and preparation.
I also wish to express my appreciation to those who attended the recent
Graduate Council-sponsored Town Hall. Your engagement is instrumental as we
begin to chart a path forward for the future of graduate education at UC
Riverside. These conversations are vital to our shared mission, and I look
forward to continuing this dialogue in the months ahead. Together, we can
ensure the continued growth, excellence, and impact of graduate education
at our institution.
Thanks,
Lidia

Academics
*Academic Affairs Resources*
All regulations and procedures regarding academic requirements for your
graduate students including committees, advancement to candidacy, degree
audtis, and graduation are available on the Graduate Division website.
<http://-%C2%A0https://graduate.ucr.edu/regulations-and-procedures>
You can also email <gaa at ucr.edu> gaa at ucr.edu with specific questions.
*Annual Review Reminder*
Eevery graduate program must conduct an annual review of their students.
Please work with the Director of Graduate Studies in your program to submit
these reviews via the new R’Grad petition (Annual Mentoring and Evaluation)
by September 30, 2025. If you have questions about the new submission
procedure, contact Associate Dean Kate Sweeny at ksweeny at ucr.edu.
*Grades, Exam Results, and Capstone Requirements*
Reporting grades and other degree requirements in a timely manner is
crucial for students to graduate on time. Late grades or degree requirement
reporting will result in graduation being delayed to a future quarter. See
the Graduate Division website
<https://graduate.ucr.edu/graduation-procedures-phd-masters-degrees?utm_source=UC+Riverside+Master+List&utm_campaign=ac867fa061-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_02_08_08_57_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-b69786bfc4->
for exact deadlines related to graduation.
*Deadlines*
The Graduate Division is implementing a more transparent and fair deadline
policy. We will be strictly enforcing all deadlines, as posted on our new
deadlines webpage
<https://graduate.ucr.edu/gaa_deadlines?utm_source=UC+Riverside+Master+List&utm_campaign=ac867fa061-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_02_08_08_57_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-b69786bfc4->.
Please ensure that you are monitoring your R’Grad queue so you do not cause
delays in your students’ petition routing.
Grad Success
GradSuccess has exciting summer programming for graduate students and
postdocs!
*Dissertation Deep Dive*
The Dissertation Deep Dive, taking place over four days in August, is aimed
at students who have a significant portion of their dissertations completed
and expect to file between September 2025 and June 2026. During this
on-campus retreat, writers can work on drafting a new chapter or revising
what they have already written. The Deep Dive gives students copious
amounts of quiet writing time along with breakfast, lunch, snacks, and
beverages. Students are placed in small groups with a writing consultant,
allowing students to seek feedback and network.
Registration is now open

*QuantCamp*
QuantCamp, offered virtually over nine days in September, prepares
first-year graduate students for the graduate-level quantitative methods
they will be using in their research. The program is an introduction for
those with no experience in programming and statistics, but can also be a
refresher course for those who have previously been exposed to the content.
Participants will be introduced to foundational concepts routinely used and
referenced by most quantitative methods in science, learning basic
mathematical and statistical concepts, combined with a practical
introduction to data analysis using R.
