Summer 2026
Faculty Quarterly
Dear Colleagues,
As we close out another productive academic year, I want to take a moment
to reflect on what we have accomplished together and share what lies ahead
for graduate education at UCR.
This year, UCR conferred graduate degrees on 300 doctoral, 48 Master of
Fine Arts, and 925 master's students. Each of these represents years of
intellectual investment, the mentorship, advising, and scholarly community
that you provide every day.
Thirty-two of your colleagues across CHASS, CNAS, SOM, and BCOE completed
our CIMER facilitation training this year, surpassing our original target,
and many have already begun leading sessions themselves, building a
distributed, self-sustaining infrastructure of mentoring expertise across
the colleges. Three doctoral programs have also launched peer mentoring
initiatives, and we are actively working to expand this model. These
efforts matter: strong mentoring relationships are among the most powerful
predictors of graduate student retention, timely degree completion, and
satisfaction. These are outcomes that reflect on all of us.
The admissions module of our new graduate student management system went
live this year, allowing programs to extend offers to prospective students
earlier and through a far more streamlined process. This is the foundation
of a comprehensive platform whose employment and financial modules will
roll out through 2026–27, ultimately reducing the administrative burden on
faculty and staff who manage graduate funding and appointments.
Graduate students are navigating questions about the responsible use of AI
in their research and scholarly work, and they are looking to their
programs for guidance. At the end of Spring quarter, we had a productive
conversation with graduate program advisors about how programs can begin
articulating clear, field-appropriate expectations. I am asking that by the
end of Fall 2026, every program has language in its graduate student
handbook that speaks to responsible AI use. The Graduate Division will
support you in this process, and I welcome your input on how best to do so.
I am pleased to share that Professor David Oglesby has joined the Graduate
Division as full-time Associate Dean, and Kara Oswood has been promoted to
Assistant Dean. These appointments strengthen our capacity to serve
faculty, students, and programs with the responsiveness and expertise this
community deserves.
The coming year will be a consequential one. Alongside the Faculty Senate,
we are planning the Chancellor's Retreat dedicated to the future of
graduate education at UCR, a structured opportunity to think together about
how we train the next generation of scholars, researchers, and creative
practitioners in a rapidly changing environment. This retreat will be the
beginning of a broader, sustained conversation, and I hope you will bring
your perspectives, your experience, and your ambitions for your programs to
that table.
I am deeply committed to this work being a genuine collaboration with
faculty. My door is always open. I welcome conversations about your
graduate programs, your students, and your ideas for strengthening graduate
education at UCR. Please do not hesitate to invite me to your faculty
meetings or your graduate student seminar series. These are among the most
valuable conversations I have, and I look forward to more of them in the
year ahead.
With warm regards,
Lidia
*Introducing the New Graduate Division Associate Dean*
Hello Everyone,
My name is David Oglesby, and on July 1st I started my new position as
Associate Dean of the Graduate Division. This position is the consolidation
of two 50% positions into a single 100% position, and I will do my very
best to fill the extremely large shoes of Emma Wilson and Kate Sweeny, who
have done such fantastic work for our graduate students and postdocs.
Over the course of my time at UCR, I have served as Undergraduate Advisor
for Geophysics, Graduate Advisor, and Chair for the Department of Earth and
Planetary Sciences. More recently, I’ve served on and chaired the UCR
Graduate Council and Committee on Planning and Budget, and I have also
served on the systemwide UC Planning and Budget Committee. Most
importantly, I have advised seven PhD students (plus two current ones), one
master’s student, and two postdocs, who have gone on to faculty positions,
the private sector, and a government lab. Helping these early career
scientists succeed in their educational goals and start their careers is
the highlight of my time at UCR.
I am delighted to be joining the great team in the Graduate Division to
help advance graduate education at UCR. I want to focus on helping to
recruit talented students to UCR, eliminating barriers, and empowering and
supporting their success. Please let me know if there is any way I can help
you in our efforts to educate and mentor the next generation of master’s
and PhD students and postdocs. I look forward to working with all of you.

offers an intensive and collaborative learning experience for graduate
student instructors and postdocs. Through hands-on activities and feedback
sessions, instructors will refine their teaching plans for this summer and
beyond. By the end of the Institute, participants will emerge with a
well-rounded understanding of curriculum development principles ready to
implement in their classrooms and syllabi. The program runs from July
20-24, and is open to graduate students and postdocs from all disciplines.
*Quant Camp*
Quant Camp, offered virtually over nine days in September, prepares
first-year graduate students for the graduate-level quantitative methods
they will be using in their research. The program is an introduction for
those with no experience in programming and statistics, or a refresher
course. Participants will be introduced to foundational concepts routinely
used and referenced by most quantitative methods in science, learning basic
mathematical and statistical concepts, combined with a practical
introduction to data analysis using R.

be offered as a two-part mini-series or as a single extended workshop,
depending on your department's preferences.
Other available topics include:
- Scholarly publishing (understanding the publishing process, selecting
journals, and navigating publication)
- Building a scholarly identity (ORCID, researcher profiles, citation
visibility, and establishing your professional presence)
- Grant and fellowship writing
- Research proposals
- Job application material support
- Writing productivity and accountability
- And other writing topics tailored to your department's needs!
