Dear colleagues,
Today I share another sad news from the History Department. Irwin Wall, Professor Emeritus in History, passed away in New York City on January 26, 2023.
Irwin joined the faculty of UCR in 1970 until 2001 when he retired to New York City, his birthplace. His extraordinary scholarship in the history of late modern France far extended the time he held a faculty position at UCR. A world-renowned historian, Irwin continued his scholarship and civic engagement in Riverside, New York City, and Paris. As Piotr Gorecki writes in his tribute (attached), "Irwin was global before we had that word."
Please join me in our remembrance and celebration of Irwin's legacy. We are honored to count him among the most renowned of our community.
In your service,
Sang-Hee Lee
Chair of the Academic Senate
