[Senate] Passing of Robert Russell, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Economics

Dear colleagues,

With a sad heart, I share the news that Robert Russell, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Economics, passed away peacefully at his home, on August 24, 2023. Kathleen Montgomery, his wife, Professor Emerita of Organizations and Management in the School of Business, writes, "Bob was sitting in his chair with a glass of wine.  It was very quick and, if you can say something about a death, it was very classy.  No pain, no suffering, just closed his eyes and was gone.  It was the way he always hoped to go."

Robert had an extraordinary career as an economist, a scholar and a mentor, spanning academic, government, and policy centers. The Senate selected Robert as the Faculty Research Lecturer, the highest research honor at UCR, and a recipient of the Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award. He retired in 2010 as a Distinguished Professor and continued as Professor of the Graduate Division. Please read Kathleen's beautiful tribute to Robert's life and career (attached).

A celebration of Robert's life will be held with details to follow.

Please join me in our remembrance and celebration of Robert's legacy. We are honored to count him among the most renowned of our community.
