Sent on behalf of Academic Senate Chair Sang-Hee Lee

Dear colleagues,

Today I relay the sad news that Robert “Bob” Rosenthal, University and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology, passed away.

Bob joined UCR in 1999, continuing his extraordinary accomplishments as a world-renowned psychologist after his retirement from Harvard. As Tuppett Yates, Chair of Psychology, writes:

Bob was a huge part of our community for nearly a quarter century, having joined our Department following his retirement from Harvard in 1999. His accomplishments and accolades are too numerous to detail, but highlights include his induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, his Lifetime Achievement award from the American Psychological Association, his receipt of the James McKeen Cattell Award from the American Society for Psychological Science, and his recognition as just one of ~40 University Professor appointed since 1960 across the entire UC System. In addition to being among the most eminent psychologists of the 20th century for his work on self-fulfilling prophecies (i.e., the Pygmalion or Rosenthal Effect), non-verbal communication, and research methods, Bob was a devoted husband to his late wife Marylu (for whom he dedicated the "MaryLu Clayton Rosenthal Dance Studio" at UCR), a beloved father and grandfather, an amazing colleague, a generous friend, and a person of utmost integrity, ingenuity, and humility. He will be dearly missed.

I will send updates with information regarding services and opportunities to honor Bob's life and legacy as it becomes available. I encourage you to read the following article, which was written about Bob, his legacy, his very special final graduate seminar, and life well-lived: https://news.ucr.edu/articles/2018/12/11/when-world-took-notice

Please join me in our remembrance and celebration of Bob’s legacy. We are honored to count him among the most renowned of our community.

In your service,

Sang-Hee

Chair of the Academic Senate
