[Senate] Passing of William W. Megenney, Professor Emeritus of Spanish & Portuguese

Dear colleagues,

With a sad heart, I share the news that William W. Megenney, Professor Emeritus of Spanish & Portuguese, passed away on November 5, 2023.

Bill had an extraordinary career as a scholar and a mentor at UCR. Here is a tribute from the Department of Hispanic Studies:
William W. Megenney was a long-serving faculty member of the UC Riverside community. He taught in the Hispanic Studies department for more than forty years. A prolific researcher, his books included, among others, A Bahian Heritage An Ethnolinguistic Study of African Influences on Bahian Portuguese, Aspectos del lenguaje afronegroide en Venezuela, Africa en Santo Domingo : su herencia lingüística, "Lengua" en la literatura neoafronegroide : Cuba y Brasil, Prolegomenos a Um Estudo Da Lingua Brasileira Nos Terreiros De Origem Africana. This important body of work in ethnolinguistics focused on the African influences on Brazilian Portuguese and Venezuelan and Caribbean Spanish, which continues to be influential for scholars today. Bill was beloved by his colleagues, staff, and students; he will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his characteristic and contagious laughter.
