[Students] Phishing campaign is targeting student accounts

Dear students,

UCR has learned of a phishing campaign targeting university students. Based
on current information, it appears the scam uses phishing emails and
fraudulent portals, manipulating students into providing their credentials
and approving multi-factor authentication requests to access student
accounts where attackers change student account information. Part of this
fraud campaign involves redirecting official university email fraud alerts
to “trash” folders to avoid detection.

ITS and UCPD are conducting investigations and
implementing additional safeguards. Student Business Services (SBS) is in
conversations with impacted students to provide relief and support.

The sophisticated social engineering aspect of this crime requires all
Highlanders to be on high alert and stay cybersmart
<https://its.ucr.edu/cybersmart>. Students and the campus community are
strongly encouraged to educate themselves on signs of increasingly
sophisticated phishing scams by visiting
its.ucr.edu/iso-alert/phishing-escalation.

If you receive a questionable email, do not click any links. Use the
"Report Suspicious" button in your Gmail (watch the how-to video on YouTube
<https://youtu.be/revwvK9DUBM?si=DdbXD0RvBoxRY7YP>) or forward it to
abuse at ucr.edu. If you believe you have been victimized by this social
engineering fraud campaign, please contact UCPD to report the incident at
ucpddetectives at ucr.edu and Student Business Services at 951.827.3204 or
sbsofc at ucr.edu to discuss options for relief.

Sincerely,

Liz
