Notice: Latest update on Canvas security breach and guidance for instructors
Dear Colleagues,
UC Riverside is continuing to follow the University of California Office of
the President’s directive
<https://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/employee-news/nationwide-security-breach-involving-canvas/>
to disable local access to Canvas until we are confident the system is
secure. While we work to restore access to Canvas, students should continue
to attend their regularly scheduled classes.
UCOP has allowed UC Berkeley and UC Merced to restore Canvas service today,
to support critical operations for finals and to test the return to service
for the UC at large. UCR currently anticipates full restoration of service
by Monday, May 11th, pending final leadership approval and security
reviews. Any changes to this expected timeframe will be communicated via
Scotmail.
Guidance for Instructors
Multiple tools and resources are available to support instruction while
Canvas is unavailable.
-
Communicating with your students: Please follow the instructions to use
iGrade <https://teaching.ucr.edu/IC#communicating-with-students> to
communicate with your students while Canvas is unavailable. iGrade is also
the way to obtain your class roster.
-
Leveraging educational technologies to teach outside of Canvas: If you
are using other UCR teaching technologies, they are still available even if
Canvas is unavailable. You can find direct access to these tools and
continuity instructions below:
-
Zoom Video Conferencing
<https://teaching.ucr.edu/IC#using-zoom-to-host-classes-onl>
-
Video and File Sharing
<https://teaching.ucr.edu/IC#video-file-sharing>
-
Exams and Assignments <https://teaching.ucr.edu/IC#exams-assignments>
-
Attendance and Feedback
<https://teaching.ucr.edu/IC#attendance-feedback>
-
Using institutionally supported platforms & technologies: The teaching
approaches mentioned above operate via secure UCR technologies and require
a netID login. This keeps our institutional data within UCR-managed
environments.
