UC Riverside has recently learned that names, Social Security numbers and
other personal information of some members of the UC community may have
been used in attempts to open unauthorized bank accounts at financial
institutions such as Chime and Go2Bank. Some of these UC community members
are receiving emails from these institutions asking them to confirm a new
account by clicking on a link in the email. It is unclear how personal
information was obtained to open these unauthorized accounts.

UC has been in touch with both Chime and Go2Bank, and both companies are
currently cooperating with UC to investigate this incident. It appears that
personnel at other companies have also received similar emails from Chime
and Go2Bank. Chime has closed some accounts and is researching whether
other accounts are authorized or not. We are currently awaiting more
information from Go2Bank.

UCR community members are encouraged to watch for suspicious emails from
either of these institutions. If you receive one of these emails, do not
click on links in the message, and please forward it to UCR’s Information
Security Office (instructions on where and how to forward these mails can
be found here
<https://ucrsupport.service-now.com/ucr_portal/?id=kb_article&sys_id=9738417a1bcb54989c0b844fdd4bcbad>).

If you believe an account has been opened in your name at one of these
institutions, you should contact the institution immediately and ask for
the account to be closed. UCR has developed a web page
<https://its.ucr.edu/iso-alert/2021/10/01/information-about-chimego2bank-solicitations-new-bank-accounts>
with additional information about this issue, contact information for Chime
and Go2Bank, and reminders about best practices for protecting yourself
against cybercrime. Please review this information and ensure that you are
taking all necessary precautions to protect your identity and personal
information.
